The camera that they are advertising is actually an extremely nice and innovative camera. During the transition from film loaded SLR cameras to digital SLR cameras Olympus made a new format called ‘four thirds’. Four Thirds cameras and lenses were completely redesigned to try and maximize the benefits of shooting digital, although with out legacy lenses and support from many renowned professionals Olympus’s sales were probably less than stellar, and their sensors always seemed a couple generations behind the competition due to their size. Olympus and Panasonic have now made a new standard called Micro Four Thirds, which is essentially the same thing as Four Thirds but smaller, as the name suggests. Micro Four Thirds get’s its size reduction by having all of the non essential parts removed from it while still maintaining the majority of the DSLR features. Technically Micro Four Thirds cameras are not DSLRs due to the lack of a through the lens viewfinder, and is more similar to a traditional rangefinder with interchangeable lenses.
If you have any general questions about DSLRs or photography post them in the comments.
