I recently saw this movie and was quite impressed by it, the simplicity in its writing style would easily allow for a theatrical production. There are only a few characters and settings, but they are all strongly built and quite interesting. But what’s most interesting about this movie is how it questions the role of genetic engineering in our society. While it might be good to do extensive research on genetic engineering, I’m quite concerned about how rapid the technology is being adopted by America. Currently genetically modified food is overwhelmingly present in our produce, yet we do not yet fully understand the implications of GMF and how it affects us. Also, getting rid of diversity in food could have adverse affects to our health as well as the ecosystem, and once we get rid of the diversity in tomatoes and other produce it is near impossible to get it back. The same thing could be said for genetically modifying people, which is what this movie is about.
Genetically Modified Food should be properly labeled, but its not, in the store so that the consumer at least knows that they are buying scientifically altered food. I personally do not have the much confidence in a such a new technology, as there have been many studies that suggest that genetically modified food can have negative affects to ones health. The FDA seems more occupied with substances (tobacco) that the general public already knows is cancer causing and unhealthy when they should be doing more research on what we do not already know. Does GMF really increase the likely hood of cancer as some studies seem to suggest? I don’t know, but I would like someone to do a more concrete study.
But politics will not get in the way of you enjoying this movie, as it’s just a smartly written movie with a great cast and excellent cinematography.

Good movie, you inspired me to rewatch it the other day. I’m not sure how I missed the obvious double helix of the staircase and that Gattaca is spelled with the four base pairs in DNA, but it was cool to get something extra out of it this time.
